the expedition: tramp lightly

In the first week of 2004, we are travelling to New Zealand to begin our next adventure. Our goal: to hike the entire country, tip to tip. Our route, which will take us from the bottom of the South Island to the tip of the North, will cover 2600 km of some of the most gorgeous landscape in the world. Very slowly.

First of all, we should say this: To hike, or tramp, across New Zealand is not a unique endeavour. In fact, New Zealand is well known for its tramping trails, which is one of the reasons we chose this mode of transport for this country. You want

"...we plan to traverse the country with one small backpack, weighing less than 15 kilos."
to see America? Do it in a car. To appreciate the size of Australia? A bike. And now, we intend to marvel at the beauty of New Zealand, the way it was meant to be seen. Tramping.

When we began planning our adventure in New Zealand, there was never a doubt that we’d be tramping. However, as with most of our expeditions, we're adding a special twist to this one: we hope to travel the entire country with merely the contents of one small backpack, weighing in at less than 15 kilos.

Our lightweight trek from the South Island up to the North Island will take us through some of the most incredible landscape on earth, including as many as fifteen National Walks, twenty National Parks and elevations upwards of 2000m. We'll be covering every type of terrain from mountain peaks to city centres, and battling ferocious New Zealand wildlife such as the, um, the Kiwi. Hey, we told you it wasn't that dangerous.

If you're here, it means we've invited you to become a part of our journey.
We hope that you'll want to become involved, whether through sponsorship, equipment contribution, or offering services in the form of communications, media or tourism.

We need assistance on all levels, so please don't hesitate to get in touch with us if you've got some ideas that aren't included on this site.

our goals:

Successfully traverse both islands with minimal equipment.

Incorporate both historic and new tracks into our route.

Through multiple avenues, share this adventure with hundreds of thousands of people.

Immerse ourselves in the New Zealand and Maori culture.

Educate local children about their own country and instill a sense of adventure in them.

Promote adventure travel in New Zealand, both locally and globally.

Inspire.

our route
Our expedition will take us on a winding route from the southern tip of the South Island to the northern tip of the North Island. We'll be hiking the entire way, with the exception of the ferry ride between the islands (we were going to put a walking-on-water joke in here, but we knew you'd see it coming).

Some days, we'll be trekking the traditional tracks and National Walks. On others, we may end up taking the road less travelled by and blazing our own way through the thick New Zealand underbrush. If a lousy hobbit could do it, why can't we?

When all is said and done, 2,600 km will have passed under our feet, we'll have crossed 12 degrees of latitude, and experienced elevations ranging from sea level to 2000 m.

"...if a lousy hobbit could do it, why can't we?"
From start to finish, the expedition will take just over 6 months, making our end date smack in the middle of winter (as we somehow have developed a habit of doing. Must be the Canadian in us). In other words, we'll be needing something a little warmer than our Australian sleeping bags to fight off winter's chill.
