the expedition: tramp lightly
In the first week of 2004, we are travelling to New Zealand to begin our next adventure. Our goal: to hike the entire
country, tip to tip. Our route, which will take us from the bottom of the South Island to the tip of the North, will cover
2600 km of some of the most gorgeous landscape in the world. Very slowly.
First of all, we should say this: To hike, or tramp, across New Zealand is not a unique endeavour. In fact, New Zealand is
well known for its tramping trails, which is one of the reasons we chose this mode of transport for this country. You want

to see America? Do it in a car. To appreciate the size of Australia? A bike. And now, we intend to marvel at the beauty
of New Zealand, the way it was meant to be seen. Tramping.
When we began planning our adventure in New Zealand, there was never a doubt that we’d be tramping. However, as with most
of our expeditions, we're adding a special twist to this one: we hope to travel the entire country with merely the
contents of one small backpack, weighing in at less than 15 kilos.
Our lightweight trek from the South Island up to the North Island will take us through some of the most incredible
landscape on earth, including as many as fifteen National Walks, twenty National Parks and elevations upwards of 2000m.
We'll be covering every type of terrain from mountain peaks to city centres, and battling ferocious New Zealand wildlife
such as the, um, the Kiwi. Hey, we told you it wasn't that dangerous.
If you're here, it means we've invited you to become a part of our journey. We hope that you'll
want to become involved, whether through sponsorship,
equipment contribution, or offering
services in the form of communications, media
or tourism.
We need assistance on all levels, so please don't hesitate to
get in touch with us if you've got some ideas that aren't
included on this site.
